“The cost of a thing is the amount of life you exchange for it.”

— Thoreau

How it works

It gets in the way three times before it stops you.

Nothing is blocked out of nowhere.

1 · It nudges

A buzz on a timer while you're in the app — a new vibration pattern each time, so you never tune it out.

2 · It rations

Daily and hourly budgets, separate weekday and weekend schedules, one shared budget across a whole category.

3 · It blocks

A full-screen block, drained of colour — and up to three better apps to open instead.

The escape hatch

There's a way out. It costs more every time.

The first relax session of the day takes one tap. The second takes two. The ninth takes nine.

The run has to be exact. Every tap buzzes, harder as you go.

Two ways to run it

For your own phone, or for one you're looking after.

Pick on first launch. Change your mind later.

Just me

You set your own limits

No account, no server. Everything stays on the phone.

Works completely offline

A home screen widget with today's totals

Optional sync across your own devices

Supervised

Someone else sets them

A parent, a partner, an accountability friend. They send an eight-character code, and from then on the limits are set remotely.

Grant or ration relax sessions from your own phone

A daily or weekly summary by email

An alert if their phone goes quiet for a day and a half

Both sides see what's shared. Either can leave at any time.

In the box

The rest of it.

Weekday and weekend rules

Saturday doesn't run on Tuesday's budget.

Categories with shared limits

One bucket, one budget — not two hours each.

Greyscale block screen

No colour pulling you back.

Home screen widget

Today's totals before you unlock anything.

It reaches your wrist

Lockouts buzz a paired watch.

Privacy

Your screen time never leaves the phone.

No account, no server. What you use and for how long is read by the phone and stays there.

Sync and supervision are the exceptions, and neither is on unless you turn it on. Supervision says exactly what it shares before you accept, not in a policy.

No messages, no photos, no keystrokes, no location. None of that is screen time.

Jolt does send anonymous statistics about which features get used — never an app name, never your usage figures — and one switch in Settings turns it off.

Phone calls and emergency services are never blockable — not by you, not by a supervisor.

Questions

Before you install it.

Is there an iPhone version?

No. Jolt needs to see which app is in front of you and draw over it. iOS doesn't allow that.

What stops me uninstalling it?

On your own phone, nothing — it's friction, not a cage. On a supervised phone the supervisor is alerted when it goes quiet.

Does it need an account?

Only for sync or supervision. Everything else works offline, signed out.

What does it cost?

[YOUR PRICING — free, one-off, or subscription]

Which permissions does it want?

Usage access, draw-over-other-apps, and notifications. It asks for each one and says why.

Set the limit while you still agree with it.

Three minutes to set up. Works offline, no account.
